January 2013

Dear Parents/Guardians:

As you read this correspondence, I hope that you had a wonderful holiday season and that you and your families have a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.  The Sewanhaka Central High School District is continuing to work diligently toward the development of the annual operating budget for the 2013-2014 school year.  The budget crisis in New York State continues to make our work this year all the more complicated.  In addition, the second year of the new legislation regarding the tax cap on the school tax levy has continued to present additional challenges as the district strives to maintain its excellent programmatic offerings for all students in grades 7 through 12.  We remain steadfast in our determination to minimize the effects of our loss of state aid and the new tax cap on the instructional programs of our district.

Another area of concentration during the upcoming months is the district’s facilities.  The Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education conducted a special meeting on Sunday, October 21, 2012 to discuss the current status of district facilities.  At the meeting, the Board authorized the district administration to establish an Ad Hoc Committee on Facilities.  The purpose of this Committee is to review pertinent data related to the status of the district’s facilities to include buildings, technology infrastructure, grounds and athletic facilities.  In addition, the Committee will examine several potential scenarios related to a potential building program and propose recommendations for the Board’s consideration. During the next few months, the members of the Ad Hoc Committee on Facilities will collect pertinent data regarding each of the district’s high schools to include the current conditions of each of the buildings, needs regarding athletic playing fields, locker rooms, gymnasiums and training facilities, and the status of the district’s technology infrastructure.  Following a thorough review of this information, the Committee will propose recommendations to the Sewanhaka Central High School Board of Education for its review.

Should the Board determine to proceed with any proposed building program, it would require approval by the component districts’ registered voters through a specially scheduled election which could take place in December 2013.  All information regarding the progress of the Ad Hoc Committee on Facilities and all proposed recommendations will be posted on the district’s website.  In addition, the process will be periodically updated during regularly scheduled Board of Education meetings.

As we enter into the winter months, there are some significant activities and events that will be scheduled in the near future.  At the end of the month, a January Regents Testing schedule will be conducted in all five high schools.  You should access your high school in order to receive specific information regarding this testing schedule.  In addition, parent/teacher conferences will be held on Thursday, January 24.  These conferences have been rescheduled as a result of the closings during the recent hurricane.

Another exciting event that is scheduled for February 7 is the district’s annual Music and Art Festival.  This year, the festival will be held at New Hyde Park Memorial High School and will begin at 7:30 P.M.  On February 27, the district’s annual Sports Night will be held at H. Frank Carey High School at 7:00 P.M.

Finally, there are two events scheduled regarding the celebration of Black History Month.  On Saturday, February 2, the 10th Annual Black History Month Celebration, sponsored by Elmont Online and Friends of Highlighting Success, will be held at Adelphi University at 2:00 PM commencing with an important roundtable discussion regarding such topics of school funding.  The celebration continues with musical performances and art displays and concludes with a dinner and awards presentations.  On Sunday, February 10, Senator Jack Martins' Dr. King Awards Gala is scheduled at the Elmont Public Library at 1:00 PM.  This event will be highlighted by student performances and an awards ceremony.  All are encouraged to attend these events.

Our high school seniors are continuing with the application process for acceptance into the colleges and universities of their choice.  The high school guidance departments have reported that our students are applying and have already been accepted into top tier colleges and universities.  Since our students are enrolled in a rigorous academic program and most are involved in a variety of co-curricular programs, we are confident that our students are prepared effectively for their post-secondary careers.

Finally, I encourage you to attend one of the schools’ outstanding musicals that are scheduled throughout the late winter and early spring months.  Please consult the district and school calendars on the website for specific announcements regarding the times and locations of each of the musicals.

In closing I would like to continue to reiterate that it is my privilege to serve as Superintendent of Schools in such a wonderful district.  In addition, I want to express my continued sincere appreciation to everyone who volunteers their time and effort through participating in such groups as the PTSA’s, Booster Clubs, Dad’s Clubs, and the Ad Hoc Committee on Facilities in order to provide exceptional support to our students and district.

Sincerely yours,

Ralph P. Ferrie, Ed.D.

Superintendent of Schools
