Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Ralph P. Ferrie, is very proud to announce that Elmont Memorial’s Model UN team who competed in the WE Model United Nations Conference in Beijing, China, won the “Best Small Delegation” award. The nine students, James Bailey, Michael Bediako, Christian Butron, Leanna Faulk, Isaiah Genao, Chukwudi Kanu, Darnell Marescot, Ashley Reese and Mykelle Richburg, were accompanied by their advisors, Mel Kohn, Nkenge Gilliam, Athena Allen, Frank Nuara and Principal of Elmont Memorial, John Capozzi.
Elmont Memorial was one of only three teams from the United States to participate in the invitation-only conference in Beijing from July 31 through August 4. They competed against 1,500 students from 22 different countries. One of the countries they represented was Bolivia, the same country that Elmont’s Model UN team represented in its first competition in 1978.
The Elmont Memorial team raised funds to cover its expenses with contributions from family, fellow students, teachers, merchants and politicians.
The Board of Education will honor these students and their advisors at an upcoming Board Meeting.
