Dear Parents,

This message is extremely important if your son or daughter receives special education services and you intend to enroll or re-enroll him or her in a private or parochial school located out of Sewanhaka Central High School District (SCHSD).

Pursuant to Section  3602-c of Education Law, parents must request special education services in writing to the “school district of location” (that is, the school district in which the private or parochial school is located) by June 1 preceding the school year for which the request for services is made. For example, if a special education student who resides in the Sewanhaka Central High School District is enrolled in St. Mary’s School in Manhasset for the 2012-2013 school year, then the parent would need to make a request in writing to the Manhasset School District by June 1, 2012 in order for that student to receive special education services. If the parent does not make the request in writing by this due date, then the student would not receive any special education services for the entire school year. Please understand that if your son or daughter is enrolled in a private or parochial school outside of the Sewanhaka Central High School District, then special education services may NOT be provided by the Sewanhaka CHSD. Rather, special education services may ONLY be provided by the District in which the private or parochial school is located.

The exception to the above rule would be if a student was not classified as a special education student when he or she entered the private or parochial school and the student was found eligible for special education classification for the first time after the student had already been enrolled in the private or parochial school.

Please feel free to contact Dr. Victoria Tripodi at the Central Administration Office at 488-9853 with any questions.
