GEOMETRY - 9A
Course Expectations
Welcome to the wonderful world of geometry! I am sure this year will be exciting, challenging and rewarding for all of us.

Attendance:

You are expected to come to class on time every day classes are in session.  Not only should you be on time, but also be prepared. Attendance is taken at the beginning of each class.

Supplies:
These materials must be brought to class every day.

You will need a dedicated 3-ring binder, loose leaf AND graph paper, divided into three sections. The sections should be:

1)      Notes and Handouts

2)      Homework

3)      Exams and Quizzes

You will also need pencils and erasers.  We will be involved in the use of protractors*, rulers* and compasses*, and graphing calculators* (TI-83 Plus, TI-84).  It is recommended that you acquire each one of your own.

*Although an IN-CLASS set of calculators, protractors, rulers and compasses will be available, these items are also needed for homework.

Grades:

Grades will be calculated as follows:

1)      Exams/Quizzes – 75% (Exams 50%, Quizzes 25%)

2)      Homework – 20%

3)      Class participation/preparedness – 5%

Exams and Quizzes:

Exams will normally be administered when deemed appropriate.  Normally you should have no less than three tests throughout a marking period.  All prior topics and units are “fair game” for any exam.  A minimum of two quizzes will also be given every marking period.  There will be a Quarterly Exam at the end of the first and third marking periods, Mid-term Exam in January, and a NYS Regents Exam in June.  All exams are cumulative.

Homework:

Homework will be assigned at least four times a week and reviewed in class the next meeting day.  Each student will be assigned specific homework problems to be presented on the next school day.  Completing your homework assignments is the best way to stay on top of your math studies. Your completed and/or corrected homework assignments will be the best study tools! A homework assignment will be considered complete if all assigned questions are either answered (with work shown) or copied onto the homework page with evidence of attempted effort.  Although homework will be reviewed in class, it may be collected at random.  By doing your homework you will inevitably do better in class since you actually know what’s going on!  Keep in mind too… I grade on effort!  Every time the class has 100% homework, every student will earn 5 extra points towards the homework grade.  We may win as a team, or lose as an individual!

LATE Homework assignments will NOT be accepted.  If you choose not to do your homework, you choose to earn a zero as a homework grade.

Class participation/preparedness:

You are expected to participate in class. Active participation is the foundation for learning!  Being prepared is a huge contributor to involvement.  If you complete or attempt your homework and bring the required supplies, you will be equipped to participate in the class discussion and instruction each and every day.  Participation in the Do Now will give you 5 points towards your homework grade.

Extra Help:

Extra help will be held on Tuesdays.  Sessions will be held from 3:15 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. in room 340.  Please keep in mind that this is extra help; not to be confused with “in place of”.  Come to extra help with specific questions on attempted problems.
